On 13 September 2010, the Nationaal Archief and Spaarnestad Photo are donating a selection of photographs to Wikimedia Nederland, which has links with Wikipedia. Wikipedia is the world’s largest online encyclopaedia, written and maintained completely by its users. The encyclopaedia is in dire need of image materials to illustrate its entries, but in many cases the photographs are unavailable for legal or other reasons.

This is set to change, at least for Dutch politics, because on 13 September the Nationaal Archief and Spaarnestad Photo will be donating more than 1000 photographs from the ANEFO press photography collection to Wikimedia Nederland, the organisation behind the Dutch version of Wikipedia. The ANEFO collection of press photography includes portrait photographs of most Dutch politicians and photographs of numerous well-known and less well-known events. Examples include the Night of Schmelzer, which led to the fall of the Dutch government, the controversial negotiations to form the government in 1977 and the first female minister, Marga Klompé. There is already a Wikipedia entry for many of the people and events featured in the photographs and the photographs can now be used to illustrate these. For many other events, the photographs represent an excellent opportunity to write an accompanying article.

On 13 September 2010, the collection will be officially handed over to Wikimedia Nederland. The use of the photographs will be carefully monitored and any findings will be published on this website.
